USDT is the most popular stablecoin, yet the “same” USDT exists on several blockchains at once. The network determines how much a transfer costs, how quickly it is credited and which address the recipient needs. Here is how USDT on TRC-20, ERC-20 and TON differ — and how to avoid losing money by choosing the wrong network.

Why USDT runs on several networks

USDT (Tether) is a token pegged to the US dollar and backed by the reserves of Tether. The token does not belong to a single blockchain: Tether issues USDT on several networks, and on each of them it is a separate token with its own smart contract.

This leads to the main rule: USDT sent on one network cannot simply be received on another. If you send USDT via TRON to an address that expects an Ethereum transfer, the funds will not arrive where you intended. That is why the network has to be chosen deliberately — and it must be the same on the sender's and the recipient's side.

USDT TRC-20 (TRON)

TRC-20 is the token standard of the TRON blockchain. A large share of all USDT transfers happens here: they are cheaper than on Ethereum and are confirmed quickly.

Address: starts with a capital T and is 34 characters long.
Fee: paid with network resources — “energy” and “bandwidth”. If you have none, the network burns TRX instead, so it is handy to keep a little TRX in your wallet.
Speed: a new block appears roughly every 3 seconds. We consider a transfer received after 20 confirmations, which usually takes about a minute.

USDT ERC-20 (Ethereum)

ERC-20 is the token standard of the Ethereum network. This is where USDT first gained mass adoption, and the network is still chosen for its reliability and support by practically every wallet and service.

Address: starts with 0x and is 42 characters long — 0x followed by 40 more characters.
Fee: gas is paid in ETH and depends on network load; at peak times it is noticeably higher than on TRON or TON. Without ETH in your balance you cannot send the token.
Speed: a block roughly every 12 seconds; we wait for 12 confirmations, which usually takes 2–3 minutes.

Other networks such as BNB Chain, Arbitrum and Polygon use the same 0x address format. That makes mistakes especially treacherous: the address “fits”, but the token ends up on a different blockchain.

USDT on TON

TON is a blockchain closely connected to the Telegram ecosystem. USDT arrived on TON later than on TRON and Ethereum, but it quickly became popular thanks to built-in wallets and low fees.

Address: in the common format it is 48 characters long and usually starts with UQ or EQ.
Fee: paid in TON and usually small; keep a little TON in your wallet to send tokens.
Speed: transactions are confirmed within seconds; 1 confirmation is enough for us.
Comment (memo). Some recipients use one address for many customers and tell payments apart by the comment. If a comment is shown on the order page, be sure to add it to your transfer.

Comparing the networks

Transfer cost. As a rule, TON and TRON are cheaper, while Ethereum is more expensive and depends more on network load.
Crediting speed. TON — 1 confirmation, ERC-20 — 12, TRC-20 — 20: in practice anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.
Platform support. All three networks are supported by popular wallets and exchanges, but not every platform withdraws USDT to all three — check in advance.
Coin for the fee. TRX for TRC-20, ETH for ERC-20 and TON for the TON network.

How to choose a network

Check which network you can send USDT from. If your exchange or wallet only withdraws to TRC-20, choose an exchange direction with USDT TRC-20.
Compare the sending fee in your wallet or on your exchange — it can differ many times over.
Make sure you have the coin for the fee if you are sending from your own wallet.
For large amounts, reliability and familiarity matter more than saving on the fee: use the network you are confident with.

How to avoid network mistakes when exchanging

Select the same network in the exchange form as the one you will send from: “Tether TRC20”, “Tether ERC20” and “Tether TON” are different directions.
Copy the address only from the order page and check the first and last characters after pasting.
Send the amount in a single transaction: one order is paid with one transfer.
If you are receiving USDT, provide an address on exactly the network you selected in the order.

If a transfer does go to the wrong network, contact support right away with the order number and the transaction hash (TXID). If it is technically possible, we will help recover the funds and will not charge anything beyond the actual network fees. See the Exchange Rules for details.

Summary

USDT is worth the same on all three networks — what differs is the fee, the speed and the address format. TRC-20 and TON are usually cheaper; ERC-20 is the familiar Ethereum standard with a higher fee. The key is that the network in the sender's wallet, in the order and on the recipient's side is the same. Brothers Exchange supports all three USDT networks as well as USDC ERC-20, Bitcoin and Ethereum — choose a direction in the exchange form.
